Keep Calm by contraomnes Keep Calm by contraomnes
A piece I did for Swiss magazine, Die Weltwoche. It was for an article about the only known survivor and escapee of the North Korean concentration camps. The piece was a play on propaganda posters from North Korea and how artificially happy they were in spite of how brutal and miserably treated its people were.

A really nice piece but frightening since it's actually a real thing. Sad dummy You could only hope to provoke people to become more aware about North Korea and the secret veil they hide behind.

It's a beautiful and emotional engaging work, but I wonder how that only survivor viewed this artwork. I heartily recommend reading some of Susan Sontag's book Regarding the Pain of Others; it discusses how we depict and explore trauma and suffering in art, and how we can make art without reinforcing the forms of suffering that have already taken place.

I do agree that getting the Korean grammar right is essential, especially because this was published in a Northern European context. With the incorrect grammar and the place of publication, it's easy to view this as a voyeuristic work depicting someone's suffering - although I seriously doubt you meant it that way. This is the difficulty in emotionally charged art relating to specific events and cultural traumas, they take a lot more thought, careful and personal consideration, and research than other artworks.

Extraordinarily impressed with your graphic style and subject choices in general :)

Right grammar is 모두

I wanted to ask you, whether I could use this picture as a poster for a hosted Lecture at our school (Palacky University in Czech Republic) about the refugees from North Korea. I am in charge of it and I want to invite as many people as possible and this poster is something perfect for it. Would that be possible?

There is nothing I do not love about this piece. Even the description is perfect. I usually try to say something constructively critical, but... I can't. Each time I see something and think "Eh, maybe that doesn't work, actually", I look at it again and realize "Oh. That's what they were going for". Even the damn description is great!

*bows down*

I was looking up North Korea last week and I agree. The place is a mess  Thank you for bringing more awareness to this issue! Your piece perfectly represents the true nature going on there.

By the way I'm just wondering what does it say underneath the poster?

Wait wait wait. The Observer, The New Yorker, a Swiss mag... please advise me on how you get these jobs? Are you proactively calling mags around the world and offering illustration? Are you listed on some "Illustrators for Hire" website? Do you have a good agent? Some business advice would really go a long way if you can spare a few sentences.

Much love.
